Ledger Start: Secure Your Digital Assets
The official guide to initializing your Ledger Nano S, Nano X, or Stax device. Begin your journey into self-custody with uncompromising security.
Get StartedWhat is a Ledger Hardware Wallet?
A Ledger hardware wallet is a physical device that stores your private keys offline, providing the highest level of security for your cryptocurrencies. By keeping your keys isolated from your computer or smartphone, it protects your assets from malware, phishing attacks, and other online threats.
Unmatched Security
Your private keys are stored in a certified secure chip, never leaving the device.
Full Control
You own your keys, you own your crypto. No third-party can access or freeze your funds.
Multi-Currency Support
Manage thousands of different coins and tokens with one device through the Ledger Live app.
A Simple 4-Step Setup
Follow these steps to initialize your device and take control of your digital assets.
1. Unbox Your Ledger Device
Inside the box, you'll find your Ledger hardware wallet, a USB cable, and recovery sheets. Familiarize yourself with the device's buttons and screen.
2. Set Up Your Device
Connect your device, choose a secure PIN, and most importantly, write down your 24-word recovery phrase on the provided sheets. This is your only backup.
3. Install Ledger Live
Download the Ledger Live application on your desktop or mobile. It’s your all-in-one portal to manage your assets, check your balance, and install apps.
4. Start Using Your Ledger
Add accounts for your favorite cryptocurrencies, and you’re ready to securely send and receive digital assets. Your keys never leave your device.
Security Best Practices
Your security is your responsibility. Follow these critical rules.
Never Share Your Recovery Phrase
Your 24 words are the master key to your funds. Anyone with them can access your crypto. Keep them secret, keep them safe.
Store Your Phrase Offline
Never store your recovery phrase on a computer, phone, or any internet-connected device. Use the physical recovery sheets and store them in a secure location.
Verify on Your Device
Always confirm transaction details (address, amount) on your Ledger device’s screen before approving. The device screen is your source of truth.
Keep Firmware Updated
Install firmware updates through Ledger Live to benefit from the latest security enhancements and features.
